Limboids chez agnès b
Limboid, a play on the words ‘Limbo’ and ‘Polaroid’, is an ongoing series part inspired by the polaroid camera. The magical and technical genius behind this machine which, with a click and a mechanical whir, delivers a unque glossy record of a recent moment into the light, has kept me spellbound for years.
I imagine, like our own births, there is an in between moment, maybe a limbo state, where creation hasn’t quite finished its task. Here I imagine half formed photographs being revealed by an organic kind of polaroid.
This particular series of acrylic and graphite paintings on plywood panels, are studies of my smaller work on porcelain which I wanted to assess much like an archeologist assesses a relic.
I exhibited the two series (work on porcelain and on plywood panels) alongside for the first time my show For Carmen’s Time at agnès b’s in april/may 2022. As always, really appreciated talking to the public about my work and I particularly loved the way viewers interpreted this series. For me they were always about the birth of an image and yet a lot of the people who I spoke to felt they were both about a beginning or an end.
