The Arab Spring uprisings in 2010 were sparked by the tunisian Mohamed Bouazizi‘s (1984-2011) self-immolation in protest of police corruption. I chose his portait from a news article and included two other legendary men who had also sacrificed themselves by self immolation in protest against injustice – the czech Jan Palach (1948 – 1969) and the vietnamese buddhist monk Thich Quang Duc (1897 – 1963). Each and every piece of velvet was hand cut and stuck down over the painted portraits.
